STARCOM MEDIA

OFFICE SPACE

Starcom USA is an online media company that is an offshoot of the global advertising company Leo Burnett. Starcom wanted to set up a new office in San Francisco that would project an urban, open, loft-like image and showcase use of technologies the company was designing and promoting for customers online. The timeline for this project was extremely compressed, so the design team had to identify ways to create the right look and feel for the space that could be implemented in short order. For example, the central glass conference room was built out of pre-fabricated panels and set in place during the furniture installation phase. In lieu of ordering and installing long lead items such as carpet, ceiling tiles, and wall coverings, the design team took advantage of existing conditions through use of exposed brick, open ceilings, and polished concrete floors.

Starcom’s online advertising product was highlighted through use of flat screens that display finished work in customer waiting areas, as well as in employee collaboration zones and break areas. The flat screen media poles float Starcom imagery throughout the workspace in a way that punctuates and enhances the open floor plan. The space exhibits a colorful pallet with playful furniture and a relaxed, yet professional, look and feel. This project was an early example of Starcom/Leo Burnett’s use of an open plan using desking systems for creative space. Subsequent projects used these concepts on a larger scale.
